    "... Maybe not, but…" His friend lowers his voice, furrowing his brow in thought. "You're curious though, aren't you?"
    On the surface, Kazuma has no interest in van Zieks' personal life, nor does he indulge in gossip about his superiors. At least, he tries not to. But this is… different. Oddly enough, this sort of mundane rumour is the exact opposite of what he's grown accustomed to; workplace chatter about relationships and marriage feels positively ridiculous when compared to the usual talk of corruption and murder. Ryunosuke is right. It does feel weird, even if it is just because van Zieks is being accused of marrying someone he just met instead of the usual legal misconduct. And he would be lying if he denied his friend's accusation.

    In attempting to untangle the truth behind his superior's sudden engagement, Kazuma finds himself untangling his own relationships - with others, himself and the world around him - and it soon becomes clear they are more complicated than he'd ever realised.

    Instead, he writes, I thought of you. Of course he did. Thought of how Asogi must have felt some similar way. Because his diagnosis isn't terminal, per se, but it is an ever-looming threat. Avoid physical activity, Mikotoba cautioned him. Anything that stresses the lungs. Avoid extreme temperatures. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

    And he thinks—he wonders—he imagines that Asogi felt the same as he set off towards England, as he acted out his mission. Not terminal, no certain chance of death, but teetering on the edge of it, always.

    So: I thought of you.
